The classical curriculum
Children learn to read with phonics, write in cursive, diagram a sentence, study history in the order it happened and learn Latin, from kindergarten through eighth grade.
What “classical” means at CCS
A classical education teaches the foundations first and in order: the sounds of letters before reading, grammar before composition, and history as one continuous story rather than scattered units.
Every CCS-America campus follows the same written scope and sequence, so the same lesson is taught in the same order in all four buildings.
Kindergarten to fifth grade
- Reading taught through phonics
- Cursive handwriting
- Formal grammar
- Arithmetic taught to mastery
- Latin roots
- History in chronological order
Sixth to eighth grade
Middle-school students at CCS Leland, CCS Southport and CCS Whiteville can earn up to five high-school credits: English I, Math I, Earth and Environmental Science, Latin I and Latin II. Placement and completion requirements apply.
