Enrollment questions

Plain answers about cost, eligibility, the lottery, siblings and daily life. If your question isn't here, call any campus office.

Cost and eligibility

Is there tuition or an application fee?

No. CCS-America schools are tuition-free public charter schools, and there is no application fee. Some costs are separate, such as uniforms and, depending on the campus, meals and optional before- and after-school care. Your campus office can tell you what applies.

Is CCS-America a private school?

No. All four schools are public charter schools: tuition-free, publicly funded, open to any North Carolina child and accountable to the North Carolina State Board of Education. They are governed by the nonprofit Classical Charter Schools of America, Inc. and managed by The Roger Bacon Academy.

Who can apply?

Any child who lives in North Carolina and is the right age for the grade. Where you live in the state does not affect the lottery. State law does not allow charter schools to limit admission based on ability, achievement, aptitude, athletic ability, disability, race, creed, national origin, religion or ancestry, so the application never asks about grades, test scores or disabilities.

How old must my child be for kindergarten?

Your child must turn 5 on or before August 31, 2027 to enter kindergarten in the 2027–28 school year.

Can we apply if we're moving to North Carolina on military orders?

Yes. Families moving to North Carolina on official military orders can apply before they arrive. You'll show proof of North Carolina residence before your child starts school.

The application and the lottery

When is open enrollment for 2027–28?

Open enrollment for 2027–28 runs December 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027. Until then, join the interest list for enrollment updates. Contact your campus if you need help with the application process.

Is it first-come, first-served?

No. Every application submitted during open enrollment is treated the same, whether it arrives on December 1 or January 31. If a grade has more applicants than seats, a lottery decides.

How does the lottery work?

Each campus holds a lottery for grades with more applicants than seats. Approved enrollment priorities are applied in the board’s adopted order, then remaining applicants are placed in random order. Seats and waiting-list positions follow that order. Ask your campus for its confirmed lottery date and notification process.

Which families get priority?

North Carolina law lets charter schools give priority to certain applicants, including siblings of current students, children of full-time staff and board members (capped at 15 percent of enrollment), and students coming from another charter school that does not offer the next grade. The CCS-America Board of Trustees decides which priorities apply and in what order; see the Board Policy Handbook.

How do siblings apply?

Complete a school application for each child and provide the sibling information requested. Multiple-birth siblings are entered in the lottery together as required by state law. Ask your campus how the board’s adopted policy applies to other siblings.

Can I apply to more than one campus?

Yes. When enrollment opens, complete a separate official application for each campus you choose. Each campus manages its own enrollment process and waiting list.

What happens if my child is waitlisted?

Your child joins the waiting list for that campus and grade according to its enrollment policy. Seats can open as families’ plans change. Keep your contact details current and contact the campus office for an official update.

Do waitlists carry over to the next school year?

The board's enrollment policy decides this. Ask your campus office for now; the 2027–28 answer will be posted here once it is confirmed.

Can my child start in the middle of the 2026–27 school year?

Current-year enrollment is closed. Open enrollment for 2027–28 runs December 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027. Join the list for enrollment updates. Contact your campus with questions.

How do I check my application status?

Contact the campus where you submitted your official application. The school handles application status, waiting-list updates and seat offers.

Daily life

Is there transportation?

Transportation arrangements are set by each campus. Call your campus office to ask about routes, stops and carline before you apply. Transportation

Are meals provided?

Meal arrangements differ by campus. CCS Whiteville and CCS Wilmington publish nutrition information online; for CCS Leland and CCS Southport, call the office. Tell the school about allergies or medical diets before the first day. Meals and menus

What are the uniform rules?

Students wear uniforms. The CCS-America uniform policy (published July 2025) lists approved clothing, colors and grooming standards; girls may wear shorts and pants as well as skirts, skorts and jumpers. Uniforms are sold through the network's uniform store.

Is there before- and after-school care?

Ask your campus office about before- and after-school care, hours and registration. Before and after school

What is the school calendar?

CCS-America schools run on a year-round calendar with breaks each quarter instead of one long summer. The 2026–27 year runs from July 29, 2026 to June 4, 2027. How the year-round calendar works

How are students with IEPs and 504 plans served?

CCS-America schools are public schools and serve students with disabilities, including students with IEPs and Section 504 plans. You don't share this on the application; the school asks at registration, after a seat is offered, so it can never affect admission. Student support

After a seat offer

What do I need at registration?

Your child's birth certificate, proof of North Carolina residence, immunization record, a health assessment for children entering North Carolina public school for the first time, custody papers if they apply, and the last report card or withdrawal form from your child's current school.
